Wes, talk about how you’ve managed to maintain yourself during COVID-19 while playing for the New Orleans Pelicans?

Playing this year in the NBA with the COVID-19 protocols was different, to say the least. My normal routine was no longer a thing. It helped that I maintained a good circle around me to get through the mental and physical parts and keep everything dialed in. I think the health protocols this year in the league had everyone a little on edge.

NBA players are known for their style choices before and after each game. How did the collaboration between yourself and designer Eric Archibald come about with the Diplomacy x Free The Future collection, which launched on Juneteenth?

I did a photoshoot for a new collection from Diplomacy, which is a black-owned brand. Eric was impressed with the images and reached out. We met up, and we got along. Over time, we came up with ideas for a collaboration. I gave them the phrase “Free the Future.” It’s something that represents a way of reaching beyond what you believe you’re capable of and thinking really big. I feel really blessed that I was able to work with Eric and the whole Diplomacy team throughout this process. It’s been so much fun.

What are some of your favorite Diplomacy x Free The Future collection pieces?

I love the entire collection. I say this because with each piece or set, you can really put your own style to it. We didn’t come up with the pieces, so everyone can wear them the same. It’s your style. You wear it how you see fit. And, we got some bright color options too so that you can stand out in FTF.

Many of the Diplomacy x Free The Future collection proceeds are going to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Houston. Talk about the process behind this initiative.

I’m very excited to be partnering with The Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Houston to give them a portion of the proceeds from the line. As a kid growing up in Houston, I loved seeing the motivation and inspiration from different adults helping the community. I want to do the same and show the kids and teens that we’re all from the same place and have the opportunity to do great things. The proceeds will go towards getting more resources for the kids at the centers and even prizes for special academic achievements. Wes loves the kids.

What does Juneteenth represent for you in your life?

Juneteenth just became a Federal Holiday. It was long overdue, but I’m glad this day is being recognized. This holiday always makes me think about the freedom that slaves fought so hard for. While it’s amazing that in our country today, I can play in the NBA, there are people in the world who are still enslaved and still fighting for their freedom. So I think on a day like today, I want to focus on finding more ways to help our community as a whole.
