Last year, COVID-19 put a halt to all in-person events. After having to cancel Twerk X Tequila last year, you threw the first woman-only Twerk X Tequila event in March of 2021. Talk about how it felt to get back out there after such a long break.

Being able to put on Twerk X Tequila after a year break felt good and scary. Operating during COVID-19 is now the new normal, and since events have been on hold for so long, I thought people wouldn’t be interested in coming. To my surprise, I was welcomed back with so much love. It felt good to put on such a beautiful event and have the support of Hornitos. The women had such a good time that night.

You just announced the new date for Twerk X Tequila, which is taking place on May 15, 2021 at Exodus Rooftop. How will this Twerk X Tequila differ from the numerous ones you’ve thrown in the past?

We haven’t had an all-inclusive Twerk X Tequila since August 24, 2019. The formula is the same. The people have missed us, and we’re giving them exactly what they want: Lana LaDonna as the host, W$Kharri as the headlining DJ, a Trice Clark Experience, and good vibes.

It takes a lot of time, effort, and womanpower to pull off such amazing events. What are some things you do to keep yourself grounded and focused through the chaos?

I take care of myself first. Any available time I have to rest, I take advantage. I schedule every aspect of my life to a “T” so that I’m aware of what’s going on. When there is something I don’t know how to do, I’m not afraid to ask for help. I’ve had a lot of time off. My focus right now is getting s — done.

As the new General Manager for the historic El Club, how will you infuse your expertise in the event curation lane with this new role?

El Club has always been home to me. Hosting my events there always felt right. When I got the call to manage El Club, I was shocked because managing a concert venue has always been my dream job, so accepting the offer was a no-brainer. I feel even more cool being a black woman leading this role because I’ve never seen or met a black woman doing this! I’m excited to see my skill set grow and meet new people in the industry.

What’s next on the agenda? Any other surprises we should be on the lookout for?

2020 taught me to live in the moment. Currently, I’m living month to month and allowing sporadic things to happen. It makes me appreciate the present a bit more. I’m learning how to navigate a very important job, take care of myself and grow Twerk X Tequila.
